For better or for worse, law school can unveil certain quirks about a person. Last week, I realized a new one about myself: I totally nerd out over going to court. Something about the sense of formality, prestige, and justice really inspires me, and last week – when I went to the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals – was no exception. But before all of that sentiment popped into my head, when my boss said we were going my first though was: what do I wear?
For lawyers arguing before a court, attire is strictly business formal. In my opinion, there’s no room for “ifs” and “buts” in that scenario, but when you’re simply sitting in court, regular business is appropriate. Even though I can easily say that now, the night before going to the court, I was in a panic about what to wear. But there to save the day, like usual, was my Little Black Dress, work edition. Seriously y’all, this dress has rescued me so many times – it would be a mistake not to have one of your own!
As for the field trip to the Seventh Circuit, just walking there made me giddy! And once we got there, we learned that Posner was on the panel….I nerd-ed out, big time. After reading so many opinions by him over the course of two years, it was hard not to feel like I just met face-to-face with a celebrity. Although I don’t agree with all of his opinions, he’s an incredible legal mind and listening to him during oral argument was a treat I’ll cherish. (PS – if you don’t know Posner, you can read a snippet about him here.)
As for the life saving dress, I got it from Nordstrom Rack for under $50! You can shop it by clicking here and more options below. Thanks so much for reading!
